It is not only high-heels that cause women to visit podiatrists with foot complaints, an expert has said.

According to Mike Batt of the Smae Institute, such items do cause health problems but they are not alone in this respect, the Times reports.

He noted that flat shoes such as toe-squeezing pumps often do not provide shock absorption and can cause in-growing toenails.

The medical expert also cited Uggs as potentially problematic footwear, describing them as a "podiatrist's dream" because they can help bring in business.

Mr Batt suggested that such fashion items are equivalent in support to walking barefoot and can result in pain in the knees and legs.

Recently, fellow foot health specialist Martyn Sherman met the stars of award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire on a trip to India, the Bury Times reported.

She regularly makes the journey to economically deprived parts of the country to help children in need of assistance.
