Some emails stay with you. This is one of them. Tina, a department manager who has worked with Simon, our audiology recruitment consultant, for many years, wrote to let him know she is retiring in October after 48 years in audiology. We are sharing it with her permission because her words say more than we ever could.

Hi Si My Friend, How's life treating you?

Just thought I'd drop you a line as it's with mixed emotions and great excitement that after 48 wonderful, challenging, and deeply rewarding years in Audiology, I have decided it is finally time to hang up my otoscope and step into my next chapter on the 15th October 2026.

Looking back, it's hard to believe that my journey started in the 1980s and I have had the immense privilege of working with and leading incredible teams across various NHS Trusts through massive technological shifts, awful governments, structural changes, and clinical advancements, but I hope with this I have always kept my patients and teams' hearing and wellbeing at the absolute heart of what I do which has just kept me sane (well sort of lol!).

But the real reason I'm writing this email is that I really wanted to say a very special thank you to you my friend.

Over the years, I truly would not be where I am today without your friendship, help, and encouragement; from putting me forward for jobs, to fighting for the best rates when times were hard; your support has been invaluable. I want you to know just how much you have meant to me throughout the years and my career, and it has been an absolute honour to work for you over so many years as you are the most compassionate professional who always had our back and fought injustice in our profession which is so rare. I thank you from the bottom of my heart as I could never have achieved what I have over the years without your years of support.

Have no intention of saying goodbye as I hope we will keep in contact.
