Mediplacements are looking to recruit a band 6 Speech and Language Therapist for a permanent position with our client in Cambridge.

The pay for this position is £30k-£43k per annum, and we are looking for someone who can start as soon as possible for a permanent duration.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

PROFESSIONAL

  • To participate as a full member of the multi-disciplinary team in assessing, planning, implementation and evaluation of individual Speech and Language Therapy treatment interventions and rehabilitation plans liaising with other relevant health professionals and agencies as appropriate.
  • To use an evidenced based patient centred approach to assess, plan, implement and evaluate treatment plans to support residents with communication and swallowing disorders due to their neurological condition and to support their physical and psychological needs in relation to their Speech and Language Therapy needs.
  • To manage and prioritise own specialist and complex caseload independently.
  • To assess and manage tracheostomised residents who have neurological conditions, including complex cases. This may include ventilated residents.
  • Work with residents, and other team members to formulate a resident treatment plan, including identify appropriate goals and using appropriate clinical interventions based on best practice, including the assessment and provision of communication aids when appropriate.
  • To demonstrate flexibility, adapting treatment plans and practice to meet the resident’s needs and circumstances, including communication and dysphagia needs.
  • To act as a clinical resource regarding Dysphagia for other SLT’s, the MDT team members and staff across PJ Care.
  • Liaise with relatives and carers with empathy, giving information, support and advice whenever and as often as required, in respect of treatment plans, and prognosis.
  • Maintain up to date and concise records and provide reports as necessary for each resident’s case review.
  • To respond to complaints promptly and sensitively, avoiding escalation of complaints where possible and seeking advice and support as required.
  • Identify risks and advise other team members on interventions to minimise risks.
  • Participate in clinical meetings, reviews and other discussions where required
  • Provide advice and support to staff by teaching relevant techniques to safely implement treatment plans.
  • To be aware of and have regard for and comply with the relevant Standards of Practice from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy and from the other statutory bodies in relation to professional matters.
  • To promote personal and social skills and leisure activities for all residents along with other members of the Therapy Team.
  • To ensure the Speech and Language Therapy equipment audits and review of Speech and Language Therapy equipment are completed and appropriate action taken.
  • Undertake such duties as may be reasonably requested from time to time.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

  • To continuously develop clinical expertise, maintaining HCPC registration and RCSLT membership.
  • To contribute to the development and training needs within the Therapy Team and the wider MDT including Nurses and Care staff.
  • To be involved in service development within the Therapy team.
  • To participate in clinical governance activities and projects, undertaking appropriate audit projects and implementing recommendations.
  • To participate in an annual appraisal with line Manager, ensuring that the objectives reflect PJ Care Values and the Speech and Language Therapy Service.
  • To review and reflect on own practice and performance through the effective use of both operational and professional supervision.

MANAGERIAL

  • To provide support and direct line supervision of Speech and Language Therapy staff including unqualified and qualified staff ensuring professional lines of accountability and priorities are met and that all policies and procedures are strictly adhered to.
  • To ensure the staff complete the necessary administration and that the information systems are in place to provide flexible and quality services and to review systems in place in liaison with the Lead Speech and Language Therapist and Therapy Manager.
  • To ensure all Professional, mandatory and other training courses are kept up to date as relevant to this post. Maintain professional competence to practice as required by Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC)

OTHER DUTIES

  • To be aware of the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, having regard for the following practices:

f) SoVA

  • To be aware of The Care Standards Act and to assist the Therapy Manager and Registered Manager in ensuring all the regulations relevant to the home are met.
  • To be aware of and enforce the Data Protection Act 1984; any employee found to have permitted unauthorised disclosure might lead to the Company and individual being prosecuted.
  • To attend clinical meetings as required providing information in advance of all the clinical Speech and Language Therapy requirements of the residents or clients.
  • To comply with and promote all company Policies and Procedures.
  • Deal with all enquiries in such a way as to promote the goodwill

Qualifications

  • Diploma / degree / masters in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Member of HCPC
  • Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy

Experience

  • Strong evidence of continued professional development
  • Post graduate courses or qualifications relevant to neurological rehabilitation
  • Experience Experience working as a Speech and Language Therapist
  • Experience working within Neurological Therapy
  • Experience working with a wide range of neurological conditions
  • Experience of working with people with chronic disability and progressive conditions.
  • Experience in tracheostomy management.
  • Experience using a wide range of approaches to the management of patients as demonstrated by clinical reasoning/
  • Experience in the selection, use and programming of augmentative communication systems for clients with communication problems.
  • Experience in the assessment and treatment of swallowing disorders.
  • Experience of report writing.
  • Experience of developing and delivering training to other professionals. Experience of inpatient/outpatient neurological rehabilitation
  • Experience in ABI Rehabilitation
  • Participation in research projects and audit

Skills, abilities and knowledge

  • A clear understanding of the professional code of conduct and relevant professional guidelines of their profession or body
  • Relevant knowledge of the range of assessment tools and therapeutic interventions in the areas of communication and dysphagia relevant to neurology
  • Understanding of relevant SLT outcome measures
  • Ability to deal with sensitive information with discretion and to maintain confidentiality always
  • Ability to multitask and to work accurately and effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Ability to organise and prioritise a complex caseload
