The NHS is in need of an additional 11,400 nurses and midwives, new data shows.
According to statistics compiled by NHS Digital, this is how many vacancies there currently are across the UK health service for trained nurses and midwives, meaning there are plenty of opportunities available for those looking for a new role.
Altogether, there were approximately 8,000 more unfilled positions within the NHS between January and March 2017 than in the same three-month period last year, bringing the total to over 86,000.
NHS Digital's data is based on information from the NHS Jobs website and shows that in March this year alone there were 30,613 vacancies for full-time healthcare staff, marking the highest monthly total since this data first started being collated in February 2015.
However, this does not take into account vacancies posted elsewhere, meaning there are likely to be as many as one million jobs on offer across the NHS at present.
As well as vacancies for nursing and midwifery staff, there are also job opportunities available for doctors, GPs, dentists and administrative team members.
To help ensure that these positions are filled, Janet Davies, general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, called on the government to end the pay cap for NHS staff, as she believes this will encourage more people towards a career in nursing.
In response to concerns, however, a spokesperson for the Department of Health emphasised the large number of jobs that have been created across the NHS since the Conservative government first came to power as part of the coalition with the Liberal Democrats in 2010.
Speaking to BBC News, the spokesperson stated: "We expect all parts of the NHS to make sure they have the right staff, in the right place, at the right time to provide safe care - which is why there are almost 32,400 more professionally qualified clinical staff, including almost 11,800 doctors and over 12,500 nurses on our wards since May 2010."
