New medical jobs may become available in Hartlepool if plans to extend a health centre are given the green light.

If approved, the additional unit would cost £2 million and would deal with minor injuries, Hartlepool Today reports.

The facility would operate seven days a week and would remain open for 24 hours a day.

Managers expect that the unit would be used by between 17,000 and 20,000 patients each year.

In conclusion, the plan for the additional unit said: "It is the aim of the health services to provide a more community based healthcare service with the aim of reducing the amount of trips to hospital."

The development may provide employment opportunities for radiographers and phlebotomists, among other experts, as there will be X-ray and blood testing facilities available.

If the unit is constructed, it will be run by Hartlepool Primary Care Trust, which was formed on April 1st 2001.

The organisation provides services for a population of around 93,000.
