A new sterile services centre which will be used by two UK hospitals has been constructed, according to reports in the Birmingham Post.

The facility, which cost £3.2 million to create, is to serve Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot and Wexham Park Hospital in Slough.

It has been developed using space made redundant by previous theatre upgrades.

Now work on the centre has been completed, its management is to be passed on to the Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

David Kingsbury, business development director for Welconstruct's London office, said: "The new unit is responsible for cleaning and sterilising all the re-usable instruments and equipment used in the operating departments, wards, clinics and departments of the trust's two main sites."

He added that a labelling system will provide the date of sterilisation, as well as autoclave and cycle numbers.

Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides inpatient and outpatient services from a total of six locations, including, Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead.
