Medical jobs may be created in Hull after planning permission was given for the creation of a new GP-led centre in the city.

Set to cost £15 million, the facility is expected to open in 2011 and construction will commence this summer.

The centre will provide healthcare services for registered and non-registered patients.

Chief executive of NHS Hull Christopher Long said: "By bringing a range of services under one roof in such a central location, we are looking to increase the choice and convenience which local people enjoy in relation to their healthcare."

He added that the development is "exciting" and will provide a contribution to the overall regeneration of the city.

Another development announced this year was the revamp of the sterile services department at Queen's Hospital in Burton.

New state-of-the-art facilities were fitted in the department as part of a £1.4 million project, which also involved improvements to the catering unit, reported.
