Mediplacements are recruiting for a Band 6 Speech & Language Therapist to work in a special needs school in Newcastle upon Tyne

Band: 6
Specialty: To be responsible for the communication and dysphagia needs of a group of students with complex communication disorders, this will include those on the autistic spectrum and those with physical difficulties

Start date: ASAP
Finish date: Likely to be 3 months

-To provide improved access to the curriculum and increase student's achievements through effective speech and language therapy in the College
To provide an initial and on-going assessment for all students that includes the following:
-Communication skills - receptive language, expressive language, pragmatics/ social use of language, speech and signing, non-verbal communication
-Eating, drinking and swallowing assessment - to ensure safety, optimum nutrition, provision of suitable aids, staff training and co-ordination of mealtime management plans
-Augmentative and alternative systems of communication - suitability of equipment, provision of new equipment, management, reassessment and monitoring
-To assess all students for funding on application
-To deliver therapy to a consistently high standard, this includes writing and achieving agreed SMART therapy targets
-To monitor the communication environment - consistency of the Total Communication approach, staff and carer training, accessibility of information
-To facilitate students' access to the College curriculum
-To agree an effective SaLT timetable and ensure provision of therapy is maintained by keeping records to support the monitoring requirements of College funders & audit quality systems. This includes supervising SaLT assistants
-To improve student's quality of life by a delivering a functional integrated programme, encouraging self-advocacy skills
-To deliver therapy in a range of settings internally and externally in community & work based environments
