Biomedical Scientists

Applicants require a BSc in biomedical science or equivalent and you will have also need to have gained extensive experience in one of the key disciplines such as Haematology or Biochemistry and be HPC registered. Biomedical Scientists from abroad do not technically require HPC registration to find work in the UK, but we strongly recommend that they apply for this as it will enhance the employment opportunities available to you.

Lab Assistants

Laboratory Assistants will not need HPC registration, but you will need some work experience in laboratories since completing your studies. The type of work we can search for would be in Specimen reception departments of any discipline assisting the Scientists in the main pathology lab.

Cytology

Cytology Biomedical Scientists or Cytoscreeners are trained through a different process than the other disciplines in Biomedical Science. To obtain agency work as a Cytoscreener, you will not need to be HPC registered as long you have an up to date cervical screening competency, NHSCSP or equivalent. Although conventional screening is still performed, Screeners in the UK are fast being retrained in Liquid Based Cytology (LBC) Gaining your HPC registration can also be advantageous for future placements.

Health Professions Council

The Health Professions Council (HPC) is an independent, UK-wide regulatory body responsible for setting and maintaining standards of professional training, performance and conduct of regulated healthcare professions, including biomedical science. It replaced the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine (CPSM) on 1 April 2002. The HPC maintains the register of biomedical scientists. It will also ensure that registration of professionals is linked to continual professional development.

There is work available for non HPC registered Scientists from overseas, but this is becoming increasingly difficult. We do recommend that people apply for their state registration to enhance work opportunities. The process takes up 4 – 12 weeks. The link below does explain the process: http://www.hpc-uk.org/apply/international.htm

Role of the Institute of Biomedical Science

The Institute of Biomedical Science, as the professional body for biomedical scientists, is the authority, by instruction of the Privy Council, which assesses and awards certificates of competence to biomedical scientists that wish to become registered according to the standards set by the HPC. The Institute Registration Unit is responsible for:

  • Accreditation of UK degree courses
  • Assessment of academic qualifications
  • Approval of laboratories for pre-registration training
  • Issue of Certificate of Competence Registration Portfolios
  • Appointment of external assessors (or examiners for oral examinations)
  • Arrangement of end point assessments (and oral examinations if a trainee is completing an old-style logbook) and
  • Awarding of a Certificate of Competence to successful individuals, which can then be submitted to the HPC in support of an application for admittance onto the register?
