1 - Minimum Requirements & Documentation

To work in the UK with Mediplacements you’ll require the following:

  • A recognised and relevant Degree.
  • A current CV outlining relevant work experience.
  • A completed Mediplacements ‘Candidate Application Form’ (.PDF Link).
  • Proof of your Identity (e.g. passport, driving licence).
  • Professional References — three are required and should be for your most recent employers (University references may also be acceptable).
  • Proof of your eligibility to work in the UK (e.g. Visa, Work Permit etc.).
  • A Police/Criminal Records Check. Professional registration with the relevant UK body as follows:
    • a) You must have professional registration with the Health Professions Council (www.hpc-uk.org) if you are a Biomedical Scientist, Dietician, Radiographer or Speech & Language Therapist.
    • b) Professional registration with the General Social Care Council (www.gscc.org.uk) if you are a Social Worker.
    • c) Professional registration with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (www.rpsgb.org.uk) if you are a Pharmacist.
    • d) We recommend professional registration with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (www.rccp.co.uk) if you are an Audiologist or Cardiac Physiologist.

2 - Eligibilty to work in the UK

To be able to work in the UK you’ll need the relevant legal immigration clearance. The options available for this include:

  • UK Ancestry
(e.g. you have a British parent or grandparent): Candidates who qualify for UK ancestry currently have a right to work in the UK for up to 4 years. More up to date information can be obtained from your nearest British High Commission/Embassy or by visiting the following web-site: www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk.
  • Dual Nationality:
If you hold dual nationality between your country and Britain or another European Union Country then you have the right to work in the UK.
  • Working Holiday Visa (WHV’s):
This is one of the most commonly used routes for Locum employment in the UK. If you are not yet 31 years old you can apply to enter the UK on a working holiday visa and this can be for a period of up to two years. The conditions of entry are strict and are detailed below. You must:
    • Be under the age of 31 when you apply for the Working Holiday Visa.
    • Be a ‘Commonwealth’ citizen, ‘British Dependent Territories’ citizen or a ‘British Overseas’ citizen.
    • Be unmarried or married to a person who at the same time qualifies for a WHV and you intend to visit the UK together.
    • Not have any children who are 5 years of age or over, or who will reach 5 years of age before you complete your stay in the UK.
    • Be intending to stay in the UK for no longer than 2 years.
    • Have sufficient funds to support your initial stay and to be able to purchase your return ticket.
  • You can organize a WHV yourself by contacting your nearest British High Commission or alternatively, our staff will be more than happy to assist you with this.
  • Work Permits:
Recruitment Agencies are not able to issue work permits that enable you to work through them on a temporary basis. Work permit applications can only be made by UK employers who have a ‘specific’ job to offer a ‘specific’ person.

Work Permits are generally only issued for jobs requiring people with degree level or equivalent professional qualifications, people with work experience at a senior level or for professions in which there is a particular skills shortage. Most of the professions catered for by Mediplacements meet these criteria. However, before a work permit is issued, the Home Office (issuing body) will need to be satisfied that the vacancy cannot be filled by a resident of the UK or the European Union.

Mediplacements have a specialist division that can assist with permanent employment in the UK and how to obtain a work permit for this. For more information contact us at info@mediplacements.com.

3 - Flights

We will need to know your exact date of arrival as well as the date that you would like to start working in the UK, before we can send your CV to any potential employers in application for work. It is therefore very important to book your flight tickets as soon as you have committed to coming to the UK.

Our recruitment Consultants are in regular contact with many Travel Agents and are able to provide you with up to date information on the latest flights available.

4 - Accommodation

Mediplacements are often able to organize accommodation in conjunction with your prospective employer, and this will generally be free of charge. There are however some employers that don’t provide accommodation, in these cases, your Recruitment Consultant will fully assist you with finding suitable and affordable accommodation close to your place of work.

5 - Your finances (Tax & National Insurances)

Our payment process:
Upon production of a time sheet, signed and authorised by your employer, we will pay you weekly, directly into your bank account. We are legally required to deduct the current rate of National Insurance and Tax contributions. Don’t worry if you don’t already have a Tax Code or National Insurance number - we’ll guide you through the process making it as straight forward as possible!

Limited Companies:
Working through a limited company can prove very lucrative for certain temporary workers in the UK. Rather than being paid directly by your recruitment agency (via their PAYE payroll), you can become an employee and shareholder of a ‘Limited Company’. This option enables you to receive some of your income in the form of a dividend rather than as a salary and therefore qualify for savings in Tax and National Insurance contributions.

Freelance Professional Services (FPS) can provide you with this service. More information about FPS is available at: www.fpsgroup.com.

6 - Banking

If you don’t already have a bank account set up in the UK, Mediplacements will assist you with this. Our staff will liaise with the Bank Manager at the closest branch to where you are going to be living in the UK on your behalf and also arrange for you to get all the necessary documentation submitted. In most cases, bank accounts are fully set up by the time you arrive in the UK.

There are certain requirements to qualify for UK bank accounts; these do vary between banks so please ask your Recruitment Consultant for the latest information regarding this.

7 - Medical & Travel Insurance

We strongly advise that you arrange for relevant Medical and Travel insurance to cover the period during which you intend to stay in the UK. Most good travel agents will be able to recommend a provider of this. However, should you need further advice please do not hesitate to contact one of our Recruitment Consultants, who’ll be more than happy to assist.

8 - The internet

Most employers in the UK provide free internet services for staff members; this is obviously very useful for keeping in touch with everyone at home! In addition, Internet cafes are now commonplace throughout many UK Cities and Towns; many provide 24 hour access to the net at very reasonable prices.

If you haven’t already done so, setting up a FREE e-mail account with www.googlemail.com provides an excellent way of using the internet to send e-mail, as you’ll be able to access your account from any computer with an Internet connection.

9 - Public Transport

The UK’s public transport system is very well developed and easy to use! There are train stations in most of the rural towns as well as the cities, this means that you can travel around easily and explore much more of the UK than just where you are living.

DOH Code of Conduct on International Recruitment...

Unfortunately, Mediplacements are no longer able to undertake the recruitment of Healthcare Workers from certain developing countries as listed under the Department of Health’s (DOH) Code of Conduct on International Recruitment (December 2004) to which we are signatories.

We are therefore unable to solicit applications from Health Professionals within certain countries including both South Africa and Nigeria. We are however, still able to assist candidates from these developing countries that have already arrived in the UK and can provide proof of their ‘right to work in the UK’.

We can also confirm that we are still able to assist candidates from other countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada. A full list of the countries that we are unable to recruit from can be viewed by clicking here.

This decision is based on guidelines issued by the UK’s Department of Health and you should find that all reputable medical recruitment agencies in the UK will give you the same information.
