A new speech and language therapy app designed to help transgender people to alter the pitch of their voice to better suit their new identity has been launched in the UK.

Expert speech therapist Christella Antoni has joined forces with speech therapy app developer Speech Tools to create the new app, which is entitled Christella VoiceUp App.

It is the first app of its kind to be available to download from the Google Play and Apple app stores and is centred around sessions on pitch and tone delivered by Ms Antoni herself.

Speech therapy is regarded as a core treatment procedure for transgender patients, but the increasing number of people trying to access this support on the NHS means that waiting lists are growing.

With this in mind, Ms Antoni has created her new app, which allows transgender individuals to work on changing the pitch of their voices by taking part in specially-designed speech and language exercises, as well as by listening to clips of other people's voices that they can then work towards emulating themselves.

There are beginner, intermediate and advanced level exercises for patients to take part in, with four hours of audio and video instruction from Ms Antoni in total.

Sam Brady, founder of Speech Tools, explained: "The rapid increase in transgender individuals seeking treatment has led to a huge rise in demand for specialist speech therapy and this has had a knock-on effect on increasing waiting times.

"The app gives people a clear structured voice therapy programme to follow and the ability to measure change in pitch over time."

Ms Antoni has spent 20 years working in the field of speech and language therapy. Since 2002, she has run the UK's only training course aimed at specialists in this discipline so they can go on to support male to female transgender patients as they work towards feminising their voices.
