Biomedical science is a relatively young field in medical science, with plenty of room for growth, expansion and innovation. It is an incredibly exciting area to work in and can be a worthwhile specialty for professionals looking to expand their own skill set, or try their hands at something new.

Working in biomedical science will see you combine skills and knowledge in biology and medicine and focus on both human and animal health. Specialising in this area will involve working on biochemical and physiological functions, anatomical and histological structures, epidemiology, and pharmacology.

A large part of biomedical science is learning how to maintain and encourage health, with many candidates having a sound knowledge in several areas of medicine, such as nutrition, diseases, and immunology.

Innovative developments

Biomedical science is changing and advancing at an exhilarating pace, with new developments and breakthroughs occurring all the time. This alone makes it an extremely exciting and interesting field for young people to start a career in.

Specialising as a biomedical scientist will put you in the privileged position of being able to use technology to improve health. As technology advances, so does biomedical science, with new devices and inventions being created, developed and improved constantly. From creating novel tests to diagnose life-threatening diseases like cancer to boost the outcome of treatment, to changing the lives of people with chronic conditions like diabetes.

Working in biomedical science means you can realistically change people's lives within your career, which is an exciting prospect for medical professionals in all fields.

Versatile field

Another advantage of working as a biomedical scientist is that it is an incredibly versatile area of medicine - in a number of ways. It will give you the opportunity to further specify the department you want to work in. Some professionals choose to dedicate their career to research - which itself is fairly broad - while others opt to work within hospitals or other settings running and perfecting tests.

As well as being versatile in this way, having a strong foundation in biology, biomedical science can also open up other avenues outside of this field.  Biomedical scientists are employed in a variety of roles in government, at colleges and universities, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and even in the veterinary service. This means that, once you have specialised in biomedical science, it means you are prepared for a range of different careers and job opportunities.

For locum biomedical scientists this can bring an added benefit of being able to work in many different areas of the field, helping you build up experience and skills.

Ability to change millions of lives

Biomedical science is probably one of the biggest disciplines in terms of the number of lives you can have an impact on. Whether you work in research or in carrying out tests, it is likely that you will be impacted by common conditions, such as heart diseases, stroke and cancer. These affect millions of people around the world, and being a biomedical scientist offers you the chance to help patients now, as well as those of the future.
