Yorkshire hospitals invest in overseas nurses

    NHS trusts across the UK are increasingly looking overseas to help alleviate the staff shortage issue that has affected the entire health service.

    The country has seen a significant loss of doctor and nursing positions in recent years and it has led to a fear that a lack of staff could compromise the level of care offered to patients, especially those admitted to accident and emergency (A&E). However, it is not just A&E where the health service has experienced problems, as a recent report from the Care Quality Commission highlighted a shortage of qualified mental health professionals.

    With nearly every department within UK hospitals suffering a shortage, it has prompted trusts to think differently and look outside the British Isles. Numerous trusts have already looked to the likes of Portugal, Italy and Greece to bring in highly trained health professionals to work in UK hospitals. Now, three hospitals in Yorkshire have followed suit as part of a £1.2 million recruitment drive.

    Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust runs facilities in Wakefield, Dewsbury and Pontefract. It is focused on bringing 60 Spanish nurses to the region in order to address the shortages it has seen in its various hospitals, the Yorkshire Post reports.

    David Melia, interim deputy chief nurse of the trust, told the news provider: "This [recruitment drive] is to support our domestic recruitment plan to ensure that we have a safe and sustainable nurse-to-patient ratio in our inpatient areas. All new recruits will go through a full and rigorous selection process that tests both the professional and clinical skills of the applicants as well as their communication skills."

    Organisations such as The Placement Group are integral to helping trusts recruit from abroad. In the past year alone, the company has worked with the likes of the Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust and Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to recruit health staff from Europe.
