Improving standards within the health sector across England is set to be the government's "top priority" in the coming year, according to prime minister David Cameron.

Mr Cameron is aiming to ensure that the NHS is not falling behind on its commitment to provide the best possible level of care to patients that are admitted to hospital. However, he conceded that there is a "long way to go" in terms of improving the current standards across the board.

The statement has come ahead of the findings of a public inquiry into the care practice at Stafford Hospital where substandard provisions had led to hundreds of patients dying. The document will provide various measures that could be implemented in the NHS over the coming years.

Despite many calls for urgent reform, the prime minister was keen to stress the number of initiatives that were currently performing well within England's health service.

Mr Cameron highlighted the "friends and family" test, which will be rolled out in April, will help to give an insight into how the NHS is performing in terms of providing adequate levels of care to patients. Those admitted to health facilities will be asked whether they would recommend the facilities to their relatives and loved ones.

He explained: "We still have a long way to go to raise standards across the NHS and get rid of those cases of poor and completely unacceptable care that blight some hospitals and homes. I want every hospital to give every patient the best possible care."

It is an important time for the NHS with it currently being in the middle of a significant savings drive, which aims to preserve £20 billion from the budget by 2015, and ensuring that the correct level of care is in place is vital. There are a number of key initiatives in the process of being rolled out including an online database which is designed to spot signs of abuse or neglect to youngsters.
