Staff shortages at Leeds hospital 'could be putting patients at risk'

A Leeds hospital has been told that patients are being put at risk because of staff shortages.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that St James's Hospital has been told by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) that while no significant harm had been caused, the dangers are heightened when wards are understaffed.
Praise was given by the CQC for the care that patients on three wards received, with staff being described as kind and considerate.
"However, it is evident from staff and patient comments that there is sometimes a shortage of staff and that this can impact on people’s care, the likelihood of patients slipping and falling, discharge planning, and on occasion their dignity can be compromised as a result," said the report.
Last month, shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said that plans to bring in army medics to cover for a shortage of professionals in hospital doctor jobs was "deeply worrying".
