Labour leader Ed Miliband believes that 6,000 nursing jobs could be saved if the government's NHS reforms are defeated.
Ministers plan to make massive cuts to the health service with a further 2,500 jobs expected to go following the 3,500 that have been lost since the last general election.
However, Mr Miliband believes that ministerial plans to reorganise the system do not need to involve a substantial amount of job cuts and has said that the money set aside for the new reforms could fund the 6,000 positions cut or under threat.
The leader of the opposition said: "We're calling for the bill to be scrapped, and for some of the money set aside to fund this reorganisation to instead be made available to the NHS to protect the thousands of nursing posts either already cut or set to be cut in the coming years."
Government officials are planning a privatisation of the health service, but a pensioner from Gloucestershire is applying for a judicial review following the county hospital's decision to outsource to a private organisation.
