Heart failure can increase the chance of suffering a fracture by 30 per cent, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Edmonton, Canada.
Doctors and those in locum cardiology work have found that heart failure is on the increase throughout the world with the condition claiming thousands of lives each year.
Figures from the NHS revealed that 32 per cent of heart failure patients die within a year of being discharged from hospital whereas the mortality rate is twice as high if the patient did not stay in a cardiac ward.
The study in Edmonton found that osteoporosis and heart failure can lead to the thinning and breaking of bones. Researchers have highlighted the fact that sufferers fall over a lot and also continually exposed to x-rays.
Sumit Majumdar, a researcher of the university, said: "Heart failure patients get a lot of x-rays and they often incidentally show many fractures of the spine that would automatically provide an indication of severe osteoporosis and need for treatment."
