A new antibody, known as OPN-305, could improve the survival rate in kidney transplants after researchers found that the agent worked in mice.
Over the last 40 years the NHS estimates that the risk of kidney cancer has jumped by 130 per cent in women and doubled in men. The health authority found that during 2007 alone 3,638 and 2,118 new cases were diagnosed in men and women respectively.
These figures have lead to an increase in the need for kidney transplants and whilst the survival rate is relatively high there is a chance that the body could reject the organ.
However, researchers at King's College School of Medicine in London found that OPN-305 significantly improved the survival rate in organ transplantation. The antibody aims to reduce inflammation caused by oxygen deprivation as a new organ enters the body.
Gerald Weissmann, M.D., editor of the FASEB Journal, said: "This new antibody is exciting because it basically increases the 'shelf life' of organs that are critically needed for transplantation. Since it is directed against molecules that regulate inflammation, OPN-305 is likely to extend the lifespan of any other transplanted organs."
