A team of researchers at Binghamton University has developed an educational course that teaches women about the dangers of heart attacks.
The deadly occurrences goes largely unnoticed in 30 to 55 per cent of women and those that ignore the signs and fail to get treated immediately run the risk of death or severe disabilities.
Researchers at the university believe that their program will shorten the time to treatment and ultimately save lives.
Heart attack symptoms differ significantly in men and women. Whilst males suffer chest pains this trait does not necessarily cross over when it comes to female patients. The condition is also harder to spot in females and can be easily ignored.
Pamela Stewart Fahs, professor and Decker Chair in Rural Nursing at the university's Decker School of Nursing, said: "Having knowledge doesn't necessarily change your behaviour, but if you don't have the knowledge, you're unlikely to change."
A recent study by a team at the Cardiovascular Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre found that grief can seriously increase the chance of a person suffering a heart attack.
It was discovered that people were 21 times more likely to have a heart attack within the first 24 hours of losing a loved one.
