Controlling blood pressure is crucial but not urgent for those with type 2 diabetes, according to a study by researchers at the University of Chicago.
Middle-aged adults that are diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension have time to try to learn how to control their high blood pressure without medications but can not put off checking it for very long.
Doctors and those in locum cardiology work are aware that sufferers that also have high blood pressure can make them susceptible to having heart attacks or strokes.
Researchers at the university believe that the consequences of delaying effective hypertension treatment for up to a year were small; a two-day reduction in quality-adjusted life expectancy.
Neda Laiteerapong, MD, instructor of medicine at the institute said: "For newly diagnosed patients, this means we have time. Most patients would prefer to control their blood pressure through diet and exercise rather than with medications, and it can take months to learn how to change old habits and master new skills."
