New clues to causes of memory loss

One in four older to elderly adults have dead brain cells or “silent strokes” and now researchers have linked these conditions to memory loss.
The team at Columbia University in New York studied 658 adults aged 65 and over without any previous history of dementia. Participants underwent a number of tests designed to challenge memory, language, speed at processing information and visual perception, 174 of the people participating had the condition.
Researchers found that those who had the "silent strokes" faired significantly worse on the memory tests. It is believed that this could be linked to Alzheimer's disease.
Adam Brickman, PhD, of the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain at the university, said: "Given that conditions like Alzheimer's disease are defined mainly by memory problems, our results may lead to further insight into what causes symptoms and the development of new interventions for prevention."
In the UK, Alzheimer's disease affects one in 14 people aged over 65 and one in six over 80.
