Biochip technology can assess blood in 20 minutes

A new biochip is being used by doctors to spot blood poisoning earlier in a bid to save more lives.
The new technology will allow physicians to analyse blood samples within their own practices, increasing the chances of spotting any sepsis meaning it can be treated sooner.
In the past doctors would have to take samples from the patient and send them off to a laboratory which wastes valuable time in which the person's condition could deteriorate. Now with the biochip technology it can assess a person's bloodstream in just 20 minutes.
Dr Albrecht Brandenburg, part of the team at the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM in Freiburg that developed the technology, said: "To analyse the biochip we have also designed a fully automatic device to carry out all the examination steps. All the doctor has to do is place the sample in the apparatus and wait for the results."
Sepsis of the blood can usually be recognised if the patient has a temperature above 38 degrees C combined with chills and fast breathing.
