Intense endurance exercise can have a detrimental effect on your heart with doctors and those in locum cardiology work having to find new ways to treat people against the condition.
Athletes who compete in events such as marathons, endurance triathlons or alpine cycling may incur damage to the right ventricles of their heart.
In a report published in the European Heart Journal, a team of researchers at the University of Melbourne, Australia, found that after testing 40 athletes five of them (13 per cent) showed signs of permanent damage to their heart.
Those who showed evidence of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed scarring of the heart muscle, known as fibrosis, and had been competing for a lengthy amount of time.
Dr André La Gerche, MD, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow at St Vincent's Hospital, University of Melbourne, Australia, said: "It is most important that our findings are not over-extrapolated to infer that endurance exercise is unhealthy. Our data does not support this premise. In most athletes, a combination of sensible training and adequate recovery should cause an improvement in heart muscle function."
