Researchers in Texas are creating tissue mimics known as 'phantoms' to develop better soft tissue.
The team at the University of Texas in Austin has been using ultrasonic imaging powered by high-frequency acoustic pulses to probe the structure of tissues.
Blending tiny particles and multicolour dyes into gelatin transforms the substance into something that can be used as a tissue replica.
In order to match human tissue the team has to add 40-micron silica spheres to the gelatin. These particles help scatter the acoustical signal, matching the behaviour of normal tissue.
Stanislav Emelianov, part of the team at the university, said: "The ability to provide phantoms that are capable of mimicking desired properties of soft tissue is critical to advance the development of new, more-accurate imaging technologies."
British company Tissue Regenix has recently won The Royal Seal after patenting a process which removes cells and other components from human and animal tissue allowing it to be used without anti-rejection drugs to replace worn out or diseased body parts.
