A simple night time airflow device could help people with asthma to breathe easier during the day.
The temperature controlled laminar airflow treatment (TLA) delivers a constant, slightly cooled airflow in the patient's breathing area.
This displaces warmer air that contains airborne allergens such as house dust mite and pet hairs.
Doing so staves off the abnormal immune response that triggers an allergic reaction, which includes the airway narrowing typical of an asthma attack.
When scientists tested the device on participants with poorly controlled atopic asthma, a 14 to 15 per cent gap was seen in quality of life scores between those using TLA and people given a dummy device.
Authors of the study, published in Thorax, noted: "The reason that nocturnal TLA is successful where so many other approaches have failed may be the profound reduction in inhaled aeroallergen exposure, which this treatment achieves."
