Eating nuts could potentially combat metabolic syndrome, new research has indicated.
A study published in the Journal of Proteome Research revealed that eating nuts increased the level of serotonin in urine.
Increased levels of serotonin have been found to improve heart health. The substance also helps transmit nerve signals, makes people feel happier and decreases feelings of hunger.
Just one ounce per day of mixed nuts, which included raw, unpeeled walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts, was enough to produce such effects.
Metabolic syndrome has symptoms which include excess abdominal fat, high blood sugar and high blood pressure - increasing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Nuts are packed with healthy nutrients including unsaturated fatty acids and polyphenols.
Meanwhile, a study in journal Nutrition and Cancer has revealed that walnuts could reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Mice whose diet included walnut developed breast cancer at less than half the rate of the group who were given a standard diet.
