Researchers investigate new way of treating major diseases

Researchers at the University of Houston are looking at a new strategy for developing drugs to treat cancer, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, and cardiovascular disease.
Scientists explain in journal Nature Reviews Drug Discovery that oestrogen influences a number of functions in the human body.
It has now been found that one of the oestrogen receptors is a potential target for treatment of Alzheimer's and a number of other chronic conditions.
One successful example of using the receptor as a drug target showed that it could be effective to combat cancer cells in breast cancer tissue.
"These modulators are well-established in the treatment of breast cancer and osteoporosis," said Dr Jan-Ake Gustafsson.
"We now are pushing the limits of their influence to develop new treatments and ultimately save lives."
This follows news that a lack of sleep could contribute to Alzheimer's risk.
Research published in journal Neurology revealed that a marker for the condition rises and falls with the individual's sleep cycle.
