Arthritis patients 'helped by swimming'

Harmful UV rays can reach eyes even on cloudy days, a vision expert has noted, meaning that sunglasses should be worn even on darker days.

Liz Segre, editorial director of AllAboutVision.com, said that eye doctors advise that sunglasses should be worn whenever we are outside in order to stop harmful UV rays reaching eyes.

He explained that the sun transmits UV rays in both winter and summer, on both rainy days and cloudy ones.

"The sun never stops producing UV rays, so even though they may be more intense in the summer, they are still coming our way in the winter as well," said Ms Segre.

Sunglasses are needed to protect against this exposure to UV light because it can increase risk for a number of eye diseases.

These include early cataracts, the exacerbation of growths on the eye such as pingueculae and pterygia, as well as retina-harming conditions such as macular degeneration.

Furthermore, UV ray exposure can also cause photokeratitis, a "corneal sunburn" which produces blurred vision, discomfort and sensitivity to light.

The expert also warned that his problem is "compounded" for skiers, as light bounces off the snow and directly into eyes.

"Ski goggles are a good idea because they keep the wind from drying your eyes and they help protect your eyes from injury if you fall," noted Ms Segre.

However, sunglasses are a popular alternative to ski goggles.

For a classic ski lodge look, holidaymakers can opt for an oversized pair of designer sunglasses, colour-coordinating the frames with their outfit.

Those hitting the slopes, however, need their sunglasses to have more of an emphasis on function than style and should opt for a pair which will shield eyes on even the brightest of days.

Skiers should also trust that the sunglasses they wear on the slope will stay on.
