Higher good cholesterol levels 'cut heart attack and stroke risk'

Raising good cholesterol levels cuts heart attack and stroke risk in diabetes patients, according to research.
A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology revealed that increasing the levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL), reduces the risk of these cardiovascular conditions.
The analysis looked at the medical records of more than 30,000 patients with diabetes and also found that patients whose HDL levels decreased had more heart attacks and strokes.
Suma Vupputuri, co-author, commented: "This is promising news for patients with diabetes, who already have an increased risk for heart problems. Raising their good cholesterol may be one more way for these patients to reduce their risk."
HDL levels can be lowered without medication by keeping their weight down, changing their diet, avoiding smoking and increasing exercise.
In other news, research published in journal Neurology revealed that people with higher levels of cholesterol could be at an elevated risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
