Bad footwear 'exacerbates gout'

Picking the right kind of footwear is paramount for people with gout, a new study has highlighted.
According to research, published in the journal of the American College of Rheumatology, gout patients who make poor footwear choices experienced higher foot-related pain, impairment and disability.
Some 56 per cent of participants were found to make good footwear choices by donning walking shoes, athletic trainers, or Oxfords.
Meanwhile, 42 per cent wore footwear such as sandals, flip-flops, slippers or moccasins, which were considered to be poor.
Bad footwear choices had characteristics such as improper cushioning, lack of support and inadequate stability and motion control.
"We found that gout patients in our study often wore improper footwear and experienced moderate to severe foot pain, impairment and disability," according to study leader Professor Keith Rome.
Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis which is caused by the crystallisation of uric acid in the joints and other tissues, resulting in severe pain and swelling, usually around the feet.
