An ingredient found in red wine could halt the malignant progression of breast cancer, researchers have claimed.
According to a paper in the FASEB journal, resveratrol, which is found in red wine, could be used to stop the growth of breast cancer.
It is known to block the growth effect of oestrogen on cancer, and inhibits the proliferation of hormone resistant breast cancer cells.
Therefore, researchers believe it could be used to prevent progression of breast cancer tumours.
Gerald Weissmann, journal editor, warned that these findings did not mean that red wine and resveratrol supplements should not be used as breast cancer treatment.
"What it does mean, however, is that scientists haven't finished distilling the secrets of good health that have been hidden in natural products such as red wine," he said.
This comes after research from the University of Calgary in Canada, which found that drinking one or two glasses of wine per day could protect against heart disease.
