Researchers have found that non-verbal hints given by a doctor are used by patients to evaluate the doctor-patient relationship.
A study published in the Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice, revealed that patients looked at whether the doctor seemed rushed or put them at ease to judge their relationship.
Doctors also reported that patients' tacit clues influenced their medical judgements.
Furthermore, some medical practitioners were much more aware of the non-verbal messages they send to patients than others were.
These non-verbal signals can include clues such as body language, eye contact, physical appearance and tone of voice.
Lead author Stephen G Henry, of the University of Michigan, said: "Our findings show that both doctors and patients identified tacit clues involving the behaviour or appearance of the other, but they were not always able to articulate precisely how these clues informed their judgments and assessments."
