New technology is able to produce neuroprotectors, which stave off certain neurodegenerative conditions, scientists have said.
A team from Tel Aviv University developed technology which is able to take stem cells from a patient's own bone marrow and cause them to differentiate into astrocyte-like cells.
According to the research, published in the Journal of Stem Cell Reviews and Reports, these astrocyte-like cells are responsible for the well-being of the brain's neurons and release neurotrophic factors, or neuroprotectants.
These are believed to play a key role in staving off amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson's disease.
The technology is now out of the laboratory and is undergoing clinical trials in patients suffering from ALS.
In other stem cell research news, a University of California Davis study has revealed that adult stem cells could be used to promote the growth of bone tissue after a cervical disk is removed.
