High fat pregnancy diet 'programs' baby to be overweight

Mothers who eat a high fat diet before and during pregnancy "program" their children to be overweight, research indicates.
A study showed that babies born to mothers with a high-fat diet have a far higher mass and smaller livers than those whose mothers do not.
However, pregnant women who switch to a low fat diet reduce the risk of these negative effects, according to the study published in the American Journal of Physiology and Endocrinology Metabolism.
Principal investigator Stephanie M Krasnow commented: "One of the key findings here is that the offspring are born with a marked shift in body composition, away from lean mass and toward fat mass, prior to any dietary exposure in the offspring themselves."
Meanwhile, research published in the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine showed that both obesity and diabetes independently contribute to a higher risk of pregnancy, delivery and newborn complications.
