An alcoholic drink each day may benefit the health of ageing women, new research indicates.
According to a study published in journal PLoS Medicine, women who drink in moderation are more likely to reach the age of 70 with fewer health problems than those who abstain or overindulge in alcohol.
Women in their mid-50s who consumed 15 to 30g of alcohol per day were seen to have a 28 per cent higher chance of ageing successfully, meaning they reached the age of 70 and beyond without developing cancer, diabetes, heart disease and other major conditions.
Furthermore, those who drank on five to seven days of the week enjoyed almost double the chance of successful ageing compared to individuals who completely abstained.
This follows a study reported on bmj.com, which revealed that high levels of chocolate consumption could be linked to a one-third reduction in the risk of developing heart disease.
