Even mild cognitive impairment, caught in its early stages, could significantly increase risk of mortality, new research indicates.
While previous studies have linked cognitive impairment to death, these investigations often focus on those with Alzheimer's disease, according to Professor Greg A Sachs, a researcher from the Regenstrief Institute.
However, these findings, published in journal Annals of Internal Medicine, found that mild, moderate and severe forms of cognitive impairment were linked to life expectancy.
"We found that even mild cognitive impairment, as determined by a simple screening tool in a primary care physician's office, has a strong impact on how long individuals survive on the same order as other chronic diseases, explained Professor Sachs.
In other news, elderly cognitive decline could be caused by too much salt in the diet and a lack of exercise, according to a study reported in journal Neurobiology of Aging.
