Register as an Dietitian
Monday 5th September 2011
There is an "indirect link" between diet and cancer risk, a nutritionist has suggested.
Charlotte Stirling Reed, of Greatvine.com, said that the link between cancer and diet is "not yet fully understood" by the medical community.
However, she continued, most in the industry do agree that diet is a factor when it comes to the development of certain cancers.
The expert said that being overweight and obese is a known risk factor for cancer, with diet being indirectly linked to the disease in this way.
"Research has linked cancers such as bowel, stomach, oesophagus, mouth and breast with the intake of particular foods, namely red and processed meat, salt and saturated fats. Most experts believe that fruit and vegetables and the antioxidants they contain do help reduce the risk of cancers," explained Ms Stirling Reed.
This follows a study at Marshall University School of Medicine which found a possible link between consuming walnuts and a reduced risk of breast cancer.
The research was published in journal Nutrition and Cancer.
