Researchers have developed a new method to predict survival after a heart transplant, which could help medical professional to identify the individuals who would most benefit from the procedure.
The model uses a series of risk factors already associated with poor outcomes such as age, race, gender, heart failure cause and whether the patients was on dialysis, with a number of points being assigned to each factor, according to the paper published in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
The sum of these points create a score, with the higher the score equating to a higher risk of death one year after transplant.
Senior author John V Conte said: "Donor hearts are a limited resource.
"Now, we have a simple-to-use tool that is highly predictive of survival after a heart transplant, and can help guide organ allocation decisions."
Meanwhile, a University of California Davis team has created an accurate computer model to test the effect of drugs on heart disease, according to a study published in journal Science Translational Medicine.
