Register as an Dietitian
Friday 2nd September 2011
Dietary changes could be key to aiding human cell repair as the body ages, according to new research published in the Journals of Gerontology.
Biologists from the University of Southern California have linked an enzyme, known as Lon, used in cell repair in younger adults with fighting oxidative damage to human cells.
They suggest that this link could explain why older humans lose energy with age, which could point the way for further research into possible dietary and pharmaceutical treatments.
Senior study author Kelvin Davies explained: "We know that mitochondrial function declines with age, which is a major limitation to cells.
"One of the components of that decline is the loss of Lon. The ability of Lon to be induced by [oxidative] stress is a very important component of overall stress resistance."
Earlier this month, research published in the Journal of Immunology suggested that the ageing process could be reversed short-term in older people using a new mechanism to control white blood cells.
