Children with asthma may benefit from treatment with vitamin C, according to new research.
A study published in journal Clinical and Translational Allergy revealed that the effect of vitamin C on a child's asthma depends on their age, their exposure to moulds or damp in their bedroom, and the severity of their condition.
In younger children aged 7.0 to 8.2 years with mild asthma symptoms, vitamin C administration was seen to increase the forced expiratory volume per one second (FEV1) rate by 37 per cent.
However, in those aged 8.3 to ten years with exposure to mould and damp in their bedroom, vitamin C increased the FEV1 level by just 21 per cent.
Therefore, in older children with severe symptoms, the effect of vitamin C was the least whereas in those who were younger and suffered symptoms only mildly, the benefit was the greatest.
This follows news that health secretary Andrew Lansley has announced a new strategy to tackle the UK's high mortality rate for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
