Setting and achieving physical activity goals could benefit rheumatoid arthritis patients, according to a new study.
The research, published in Arthritis Care & Research, also found that those patients with higher levels of self-efficacy for physical activity were more likely to achieve their goals.
Completion of these goals was associated with lower amounts of self-reported arthritis pain and increased health-related quality of life.
Some 75 per cent of participants rated their physical activity goal achievement at 50 per cent or more after six months.
Keegan Knittle, of Leiden University, said: "Our results suggest that an increased focus on self-efficacy enhancement, realistic goal-setting, and techniques that increase the likelihood of goal achievement will assist clinicians and researchers develop interventions that have a positive impact on pain reduction and quality of life outcomes for RA patients."
In other news, Neil Betteridge, chief executive of Arthritis Care has said it is essential that rheumatoid arthritis is detected as early as possible, as new therapies are "quite powerful" when implemented soon enough.
