Smokers who have co-morbid conditions such as alcohol, drug and mental disorders would benefit from smoking cessation help from their doctor, according to new research.
These patients would be five times more successful at quitting smoking with such counselling from their primary care physician, according to the study published in journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research.
While smokers without these problems were equally likely to receive smoking cessation counselling, those with co-morbid conditions managed to stop smoking at equal levels with help from the doctor.
The study states: "This study shows that primary care physicians can help smokers with alcohol, drug or mental disorders to successfully quit.
"These smokers should be targeted for smoking cessation counselling to reduce the health burden of tobacco."
Meanwhile, a study published in the Journal of Human Capital revealed that prenatal smoking could cause as much as a 40 per cent increase in the probability of developmental problems in the child.
