Register as an Dietitian

Some 70 per cent of eight-month-old babies are consuming too much salt, new research has shown.
A study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that an excess of processed food products such as yeast extract, gravy, baked beans and tinned spaghetti is resulting in too much salt in the diets of British infants.
In addition, many babies are fed cows' milk, which contains higher levels of salt than breast or formula milk, despite advice that children should not be fed this until they are at least one year old.
The high levels of sale could potentially damage developing kidneys and give children a predisposition for salty foods, establishing poor eating practises that can result in health issues in later life.
Researchers Dr Pauline Emmett and Vicky Cribb noted: "Infants need foods specifically prepared for them without added salt, so it is important to adapt the family diet."
This follows the introduction of the government's Responsibility Deal, which aims to reduce salt in food, remove artificial trans-fats and increase workplace health, while implementing calorie labelling on menus by September 2011.
