Individuals experiencing low blood pressuring during a dialysis procedure could be at an increased risk of clots, a study has shown.
Research published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology reported an increased risk of blood clotting at the point where the patient's blood vessels are connected to the dialysis machine.
Side effects associated with the sudden drop in blood pressure during dialysis also include stroke, seizure, heart damage and death.
Tara Chang, of Stanford University, said: "There is so much we don't know about blood pressure in people on dialysis.
"We need future blood pressure management studies to look at not only mortality and hospitalisation, but also consider vascular access survival as another important endpoint to study."
This follows news that knee replacement surgery could increase the risk of blood clot formation in certain patients, according a study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
