Treating children infected with the E. coli virus with intravenous (IV) fluids early on in the condition lowers the risk of severe kidney infection, a new study has revealed.
Research published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine noted that around 15 to 20 per cent of children with E. coli O157:H7 develop hemolytic uremic syndrome.
This can sometimes cause permanent kidney damage or even death.
First author Christina Ahn Hickey, of Washington University in St Louis, explained that IV fluids keep the kidneys working, reducing the impact of kidney failure.
"To ensure that the kidneys get enough blood flow, we need to have sodium-containing fluid go straight to the blood vessels, and it's faster and more effective to use an IV," she explained.
This follows news that an anti-inflammatory drug prescribed to patients with type 2 diabetes could improve kidney function, according to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
