Consuming a vegetarian diet could protect against common bowel disorder diverticular disease, new findings suggest.
A study published on bmj.com discovered that vegetarians are one-third less likely to develop the condition than their meat eating peers.
Prior research indicated that vegetarians could be at a lower risk of suffering from diverticular disease due to the high amount of fibre in a non-meat diet.
Researchers at the University of Oxford then found that individuals who consumed around 25g of dietary fibre per day had a lower risk of being admitted to hospital or dying from diverticular disease than those who had less than 14g each day.
Authors concluded: "Overall the opportunity for preventing the occurrence of diverticular disease and other conditions, such as colorectal cancer, probably lies in the modification of diet, at either a population or an individual level."
In other news, changes to diet and lifestyle could cut the number of Alzheimer's diagnoses in half, according to a study carried out at San Francisco VA Medical Center.
