Contraceptive pills 'reduce bone density'

Birth control pills may reduce bone density in women, new findings show.
Research published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that after two year, teens who used 30-35 microgram pills exhibited approximately one per cent less gain in bone density at both the spine and whole body sites than other teens.
Teens that stopped taking the birth control pill still had smaller bone density gains at the spine compared to their peers some 12 to 24 months after stopping.
Moreover, differences in bone density between user and nonusers of the contraceptives were under two per cent and were exhibited only after two or more years of use and only at some measured sites.
Senior Investigator Delia Scholes added: "We found that oral contraceptive use had a small negative impact on bone gain at these ages, but took time to appear, and depended on hormone dose."
Previously, research from Loyola University indicated that taking birth control pills could increase the likelihood of suffering a stroke.
