The government has announced a new strategy to tackle the UK's high mortality rate from respiratory diseases.
Currently, the UK has the second highest death rate in Europe from conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma and could save some 2,000 lives per year by merely performing at the EU average for such respiratory diseases.
The Outcomes Strategy for COPD and Asthma is to work towards early accurate diagnosis, chronic disease management and good control of symptoms as well as targeted evidence-based treatment for the individual.
According to the government, NHS staff will work closely with patients, social care and voluntary organisations to improve respiratory health.
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: "We want to liberate the NHS and give staff the freedom to work across boundaries with patients and other professionals to provide a more responsive and personalised NHS."
This follows research published in journal Nature Immunology, which uncovered a new set of target drugs for asthma after explaining why influenza triggers asthma attacks.
