A behavioural intervention plan could help obese adults to lose weight, results of a new study suggest, potentially changing the way professionals in specialist dietician jobs treat some patients.
Research published in the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity found that the promotion of body image could improve the effectiveness of weight loss programmes based on diet and exercise.
Overweight and obese women were enrolled in a year-long weight loss program.
Half of the participants received information regarding good nutrition, stress management and the importance of being healthy.
A second group attended 30 weekly group sessions discussing issues such as exercise, emotional eating, improving body image and how to recognise and overcome personal barriers to weight loss and lapses from diet.
In the second group, body image was seen to improve while concerns were reduced. Women in this group lost an average seven per cent of their body weight, in comparison to less than two per cent in the control group.
In other news, eating disorder bulimia could alter the brain function of sufferers, according to researchers at the University of Colorado.
