Bone marrow transplants safer?

Bone marrow transplant survival rates have been seen to more than double in recent years for young, high-risk leukemia patients at one hospital.
Researchers at St Jude Children's Research hospital found that this was most prevalent in patients who did not have genetically matched donors.
These results could make transplantation an option for many more children and adolescents with high risk forms of leukaemia who lack genetically matched donors, according to the study published in journal Blood.
Senior author Ching-Hon Pui said: "We can now identify donors for virtually all pediatric patients who need transplant to cure their leukemia. Importantly, our transplanted patients not only have high cure rates but also excellent quality of life, resulting largely from advances in chemotherapy, donor selection and supportive care."
This follows a study entitled the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study which revealed that childhood cancer survivors are at a higher risk for developing multiple tumours as they age.
